This year’s group of Young Social Innovators are focusing their project on aspects of life among the LGBT community. The title of the project is “Closets are for Clothes.” The team hope to increase their own understanding of the difficulties facing a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender young person in a second level school. To date they have been busy researching and deepening their own understanding of some of the issues which affect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people. They have had a workshop facilitated by Sandra Irwin Gowran from GLEN (Gay Lesbian Equality Network) which was most informative. Ms Moira Germaine, who works in the area of health promotion, also facilitated a workshop with the team which they found very worthwhile. Both of these workshops have helped the team progress their ideas for taking action on this issue. They have established links with BeLonGTo and hope to organise “An Awareness Week” in conjunction with “Stand Up! Week” in April 2015. They are also working closely with Anne Marie Dwyer from Carlow Regional Youth Services.
